    Perique for snus?

    Friends,

I am a great lover of perique tobacco for both chewing and smoking in a pipe. I was fortunate to live in an area where the rare Jewel of St. James perique was sold in pipe stores and chewed/smoked all that I could afford. I would eat the stuff if I could stomach it!

Aside from Kardus and the new Islay Snus, I often feel that snus lacks the deep, figgy, funky, anaerobic flavors that I associate with perique tobacco and virginia pipe tobaccos.

Has anyone tried to process any of the available periques into snus? I have some from Mclelland that I am planning to try coverting to snus.

Does anyone have a source for real St. James perique tobacco that has NOT been processed into pipe tobacco? I tend to think that getting the stuff as close to the barrel would be best for snus.

    Kind Regards,
    moogjuke

Perique's kind of the anti-snus. There's no law that says you can't make oral tobacco with it, but you'll lose many of the positive benefits of snus due to a higher TSNA content of perique. I think it would be more a dip than a snus. Cousins, but different all the same.

I wholeheartedly agree with the desire for a snus that encapsulates that amazing depth of fruity flavour that fermented tobacco has.

I think one or two of the kardus offerings nailed it ... Gellivare had it ... And Skruf comes pretty close too.

But this year I made my own fermented carrotte tobacco from what I grew. It was gorgeous stuff to smell or smoke in a pipe, but the snus making process was less kind to it's fruity aromas. I don't think it's as simple as taking a good smoking tobacco and making snus from it. Instead we have to figure a way of crafting a snus that tastes that way by other means!

Sometimes wrong and sometimes right .... but ALWAYS certain!!!

The company was sold, and not only did it come with a small, secret remaining inventory, they resumed production. I thought that Mark Ryan bought it. There would have been a serious shortage due to the long assed time from start to finish.

My last crop of tobacco was perique, best crop I grew, was well adapted to the soil on the farm where I grew it. Although I understand the soil there (St. James) is the key to the final product, and that my crop would not work. I have about twenty pounds of it. It is like a good burley otherwise. I blend it 50 percent to 40 percent Virginia and 10 percent Turkish Izmir for my wifes smokes. It grew 7 foot tall with huge leaves......what I remember best is that the bugs left it alone.

                Yep... just looked it up..
Mark Ryan bought it in 2005. If he had not... it would probably be gone now. Mark is a tobacco genius. Check out Daughters and Ryan (D&R) tobacco. I bet getting some Santa Fe perique rolling tobacco would be worth your while.
