It is in fact safer, theoretically, but the differences are in reality very small and are likely to be overwhelmed by a number of other factors. There is no database of which I am aware on the subject but if a study was done comparing cancer rates between air-cured chew and fire-cured chew I'd be extremely surprised if a statistically significant difference was detected. Aside from the low likelihood of such a study the numbers of air-cured chew users in this country are so small, and any corresponding study sample so small, that any inferences at all as to the relative safety levels of the products would very problematic indeed. In fact this scarcity of users would likely doom any study comparing air-cured chew to any other product, except cigarettes of course, to irrelevancy. My sober considered scientific opinion is this: F**k it. Chew it, dip it, snus it, just don't smoke it (except in a pipe). Now who took that candy bar I left on the table?

Awhile back when I was a wee gaffer, there were two elderly curios who jointly owned & operated the local hangout/pool hall. Being brothers, everything naturally, was heavily debated. Especially their tobacco choices.
One chewed twist, (brand unknown, as it was a combination of tobacco & everything else inside the pocket of his overalls) the other smoked (Zig-Zags as big as his fingers rolled in whatever cellulose was available).
As to who had acquired the greatest showmanship talent from their 60+ years of tobacco use, a contest was hammered out one cold winter evening.
Simple Rules:
Manufacture the most smoke rings in one drag of Zig vs. hitting the hastily devised spittoon/tin can (he preferred swallowing) from unparalleled distance. Total rings up against total feet.
Pool games were put on hold & spectators filled the benches around an improvised arena. Bets were placed.
To the cheers of the crowd Twist not only won with his uncanny juice accuracy,he promptly proceeded to best ZigZag at his own game.
While collecting his handful of crumpled bills from Zig, Twist loudly proclaimed to the vanguished. "See, I told ya......Smokin' ain't no good fer ya".

Loving the cotton boll twist that Ansel sent me, I'm tending to have one or two cuts off it a day when I need a good nic hit. Shame we can't get it in the uk, from what I've heard English twist doesn't taste that great and has lots of tsna's. I'm ordering some redman chew from snus2 today, I quite like the ritual of spitting and chewing and will probably be supplementing my snus with this.

Vulpes - you can get this in the UK from snus.de
Although it's really expensive for snus, you can get some things you can't get elsewhere. If you need a referral I can let you in - PM me.Squeezyjohn
