lös is easy for french speakers too - we have it in words like "peu", "jeune", "bleu", "oeuf", etc. The best language to learn vowels is cantonese, though, I think - holy crap, everything is a great big vowel in that language! :shock: :lol:

Actually, I agree - I take back what I said before :lol: I haven't heard anyone speak swedish in almost two years - my ears are lazy. I guess what threw me off was him saying "it's not like loose", which is true of american english, but in Canada we say words like "loose", "moose", etc, with different vowel sounds which are actually a lot closer to a swedish "u" than the american equivalent. I was looking for something more closed and more forward than that vowel sound and ended up at ü, which was going a bit too far. It's why the yanks tease us about words like "about" :lol:

Being raised in Cahleefoaneeah (as our illustrious :roll: "Governator" pronounces it :lol: ) heck - i don't even pronounce "cot" and "caught" differently. They are homophones in my dialect. ops:
That being said, we do have some exposure to some strange sounds here. Prehaps i jumped the gun in proclaiming Zero to be "absolutely scientifically correct" (no offence Zero - your vast knowledge is invaluable here) The vowel sound i hear in the swedish pronounciation of "snus" is somewhat reminiscent of the sound in surfer-speak for "dude" which is not the same as the sound in "food" or "tune" in this dialect. I would describe it as a near-close central rounded vowel. The swedish u is (in my guestimation) a closed central rounded vowel tho it could be a closed central compressed vowel.
Oh well, i'm still gonna rhyme it with "puss" :lol:
