I remember when they were like 50 cents, I think. Or maybe I am am having selective memory.
The cheapest I remember was 75¢ from a machine. Over the counter they were probably 50-60¢. That was well before I was legal to smoke. I guess I was 9 or 10. The smoking age in MD was 14 at the time :^D

I was way to young to smoke em then too. I cant really remember, but I think they were about 1.50 when I got old enough to buy em. Prior to that I just snagged em from my Dad

I think the legal age was 18, but people were way cooler then and I could buy em from the store near my house starting about 15ish.

$10.50 is completely insane. Here in Seattle the 2 shops that carry General sell cans for $8. Cigs go for a little more at these 2 stores, and elsewhere they're anywhere from $7.80 to $8.25 now. I hate buying cigs for my girlfriend... Feels like I'm just giving money away. Whatever happens with snus in the US, these really will be looked back at as the glory days. I just read lxskllr's post in another thread where his order came to... what, $2.91 per can? These days are numbered, whatever the outcome! To answer the question though, I do not plan on stockpiling until I have a better sense of the timeline and implications of all this.

I wonder what the tax rate was then. I think in WI it is approx. 25% right now. Imagine the out-cry if that was on beer.

Cigarettes were $0.90 when I started smoking.

            $5.30 now.

                    Thanks ****er.

Got a birthday coming up. Wonder how much cigs will cost then.

You don't look much younger than me.

I just scored my smokes before you started. The trick was to be super straight to the old lady at the local convenience store. Them cougars just melt when a young man gives em a nod like they still have a chance.

When I first started, premium cigarettes were less than a dollar a pack. I want to say they were like .85 cents. Then I remember seeing Marlboro go to 1.00, and all the others soon followed.

Does anyone remember Harley Davidson cigarettes? That was the first cigarette I ever smoked. They were .50 a pack. That was the absolute cheapest smoke I ever saw. Later they changed the name to "Maverick" which last I saw is still around. Even when I was like 12 or 13, .50 a pack was outrageously cheap. That was back when Arabic store owners would sell cigarettes to a 13 year old kid without the State and Feds coming in and slapping him with a 5,000 fine or whatever it is now.

So when is snus going to become banned? I thought there was speculation as to if it will effect snus or not?

I remember that. They tasted like RYO.

I remember buying Harley Davidson cigarettes back around 1990.

I also remember name brand cigarettes for 35 cents a pack back around 1970. There were still a lot of people smoking straights back then and cigarette vending machines were common.

back in the 50's Pall Mall, Chesterfield Kings, etc were like 25 cents a pack and pretty much anyone of any age could buy them. If you were 7-8 years old you just had to tell the clerk they were for your mom.
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.
