    SCHIP April 1 tax increases

    from:
    http://www.tobaccotoday.info/2009/01...-barack-obama/
    The new tax rates are effective April 1, 2009;
    The cigarette tax rate goes from $.39 per pack to $1.00 per pack;
    The tax on snuff goes from $.585 per pound to $1.50 per pound;
    The tax on pipe tobacco goes from $1.0969 per pound to $2.8126 per pound;
    The tax on RYO goes from $1.0969 per pound to $24.62 per pound (not a typo).
    Additionally the definition of RYO has been expanded to include cigar wrappers to address the “blunt wraps” issue;
    The tax change to small cigars (cigars weighing less the three (3) pounds per thousand will be phased in over five (5) years at the following rates per year:
    2009 & 2010 - $.25 per pack
    2011 & 2012 - $.50 per pack
    2013 & 2014 - $.75 per pack
    2015 and beyond - $1.00 per pack
    My General Wintergreen from getsnus is stamped as "Tax Class M"
    "Tax Class M" = snuff
    which makes sense since snus is Swedish for snuff

    So I'm assuming.
    "The tax on snuff goes from $.585 per pound to $1.50 per pound"
    will apply to our snus.

    24 pouches Net Weisght 0.9 oz. (24 g).
    1 pound = 453.59237 grams
    so it's about 19 "pucks" of portion snus to the pound.

    That's not bad for us compared to other classes of tobacco.
    Unless I am reading it wrong or missing something.

    Hmm, methinks it's about to get a bunch more expensive ordering the snus from within the US. Another reason to stick with Buysnus or Northerner??

      You know, the few dollars I'd save buying within the US probably just got evened out by taxes. I think the only plus now would be if I suddenly find myself in a pinch and really need my next order within 3-4 days instead of 6-7. How often does that happen, though?

        Yeah, this doesn't seem like a big deal unless you're ordering General WG or General from getsnus. Those, as far as I know, are the only snus packaged in the US, and therefore the only ones that would be taxed under this increase. Remember, you've never paid a tax on snus before, what makes you think it will be included now?

          Unless my math is wrong.
          Another dollar a pound is still next to nothing.
          The incresed taxes still works out to about 50 cents per ROLL

          The ones that will be really crying will the RYO crowd.
          A pound of Bugler or Top RYO tobacco.
          Their tax is going from $1.0969 per pound to $24.78 per pound OUCH!

            Yah ouch for RYO, doesn't effect me since I use buysnus.

            But, 4 million children have health insurance as a result. So that is good.

              Yeah right. And how many million of those are illegal aliens?

                Way too many. I can understand if a few slip into the system but there are more than a few. The amount of free health care these aliens get is ridiculous.

                  You got that right. All the while our insurance premiums and taxes continue to increase in order to pay for it all. Of course the Chamber of Commerce libertarians and Big Government socialists either don't recognize or just don't care about this real cost to the honest and law-abiding working man trying to take care of his own family.

                    I've come to the realization that most representatives of the federal government do not give a damn about the average joe. My states reps have been very attentive to me and I appreciate that. I believe that the states gaining back their sovereignty is the only hope we have left!

                      I have a bad feeling the parcel might get taxed when it gets to the US border, I think I'll buy enough snus for 6 months before April.

                        Well I doubt anyhting under 200 bucks will be taxed, as it is duty free.

                        However, I do not mind paying a bit more to help the United States move toward providing more healthcare for its citizens.

                          You have a point about healthcare provided the money is put to good use properly. Tax increase is sometimes needed to compensate for all the pork, waste and goofups of the government.

                            Sal100, correct.

                            I do mind paying more for my snus if it is going to invade some foreign nation.

                              Why not when a foreign nation is invading us?
