    new to snus, quitting smoking

So I was debating whether or not I should post on these forums but everyone seems so friendly on here, I couldn't resist!

I'm 19 years old and had been smoking a pack a day since i was 15. My fiance has finally convinced me to quit smoking. I was originally looking at using Skoal snuff pouches as an alternative to smoking but dip is disgusting and it burns my jaw. I heard about Snus when I saw an ad for the Camel Snus and after a few days of extensive research I've decided to give Snus a try. I'll be placing my first order at buysnus.com.

Basically I'm trying to decide what portion snus i should get. I used to smoke a pack of smokes a day, should I start with strong portion? Also any recommendations for my first order would be greatly appreciated!

Well welcome to the forums and good luck with quitting smoking.

    I would order

    General Portions
Ettan Portions and anything thats just normal nic to start off with and also get some strark/sterk as well, you just dont want to get something that blows your head off and have nothing to fall back on.

I would mix it up with Normal and Stark and just enjoy.

1 roll Nic and Johnny (don't worry, you'll use the whole roll I promise)

Couple cans each of Ettan & Goatesburg los and/or portions (you can't NOT like these 2 brands imo)

1 roll Skruf Stark los (this is the most powerful snus, you'd be a fool not to use skruf in your quit-smoking snus arsenal)

That'll keep you off the smokes.

Nick and Johnny portions are strong (11mg/g nicotine) and have a traditional tobacco flavor. I used to only smoke eight-ten cigarettes per day and regular portions did nothing for me; I could only get the "nicotine kick" from strong/stark snus.

I suggest Grov as a good starter, also. I'll also chime in with get some Strong. They are a big help when kicking cigs. Nick & Johnny, Skruff, General Sterk, take your pick.

Here is what has kept me off the cigs for nearly a month, without a hint of desire to revert...

I recommend the 24 tin sampler from the Northerner. It's a bit of money up front, but it gives a very good representation of what's available in different styles, and from different manufacturers.

Looks like a pretty good order. Kinda ballsy though, going with a roll taste untasted :^P

heatX, First, I am letting down my snus welcome wagon duties....Welcome to the forum. I am glad you posted. All of us were new at one time, and 80%+ of us quit smoking using snus.

When I was making the slow switch over between cigarettes and snus 19 months ago, I needed strong to get me through each day. I was cheap, so used Offroad strong, but I depended on strong for about 6 weeks. even now, 19 months later, I almost always still have a strong open for those moments I need that extra kick.

So having so much Skruff is smart, I think. Eventually, it just got too strong for me, but I think you are a far ways off from that.

I think your order is most excellent!! You have some variety, when you just need a break from the Skruff. But I suspect your nicotine needs this early will have you using 3 Skruff, for every regular portion. So I suspect your mix ratio is just about spot on.

Most excellent newbie order, my friend!! Very well done!

Now, as I have said before, and I will say now. Don't stress about the not smoking part. let it come naturally. You will still smoke at first. But if you just give it time, you will find you smoke less and less, until one day, it's been a month since you last bought a pack of cigarettes. It's the beauty of Swedish snus, you don't have to do a damn thing to quit smoking. the snus will win you over on it's own. You don't have to "try" to help it.

my quit was much, much quicker.

The first snus I tried, was the last of the cigs for me. Instant, and complete switchover. No waiting, doing both, none of that. Cigs gone, snus in, that was it

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome! I forgot to mention, decided to stick with portion snus for the first order cause loose snus seems messy, kinda reminds me of dip.

When I started using Skoal pouches it was very easy to quit the smokes. I have been going most days with only 2-5 cigs throughout the whole day and only about 6 or 7 pouches. Those things tore up my gums, though.

I just bought my last 4 packs of camel filters before the Snus comes and I'm smoking the hell out of them =/ but it seems I shouldn't have a problem making the switch =)

heatX, welcome! I agree with sagedil; don't stress about not smoking at all after you start snusing. You may stop wanting to smoke after your first portion, or you may smoke a few cigarettes a day for a couple weeks. Don't stress about it! I smoked (about half or less of what I was before) between snus(es?) when I first started, but after a while, I just stopped wanting to smoke. Tried one one day and thought it tasted terrible. At first you'll probably want to smoke because the nicotine from snus takes 5-10 minutes to really pick up. You'll get used to that, but until you do, don't feel bad about smoking every now and then.

pcguy, I'm glad for you, but you are in the extreme minority here. For almost all of us who smoked, it went the way both I and cocsp2002 described.

heatX, let us know what you think once you get your order. I love reading new folks reactions to snus. Makes me smile and remeber when it was new to me too!!

Eventually, try los, at least just to see what it is all about. I did, and really tried to like it. But in the end, I just discovered how much I prefer portions.
