    Snus Review: Gotlandssnus Grönsnus

    BRAND:"Grönsnus"

    MANUFACTURER:Gotlandssnus

    TYPE REVIEWED:Original Portion, Large

    DATE ON CAN:25/08/08

MANUFACUTRER'S DESCRIPTION:"Grönsnus is a very tasty snus with a hint of Gotland’s lush green plants. The taste of elder is the characteristic of this snus."

COMMENTS: Upon opening can, the aroma is very interesting. Very herbal, very flowery, and very, well....Green. In fact, had my eyes been closed I might have said it smelled like a decent white wine. The can does not have a receptacle for spent portions, which is a minor inconvenience.

The portion material is pliable and of good quality. The snus inside is very moist and plentiful---no skimping on the snus, here! It has a very full and good feeling under the lip. The portions are not hard on the gum at all, nor do they become slimy after some time. The nicotine level is sufficient; I noticed the characteristic tingle within a minute. Not a stark, but not a weakling either.

As far as flavor goes, again, it has a very green, herbal taste. I'm not familiar with the "Elder Flower", but there is a definite flowery note to it. And again, it almost had a flavor of crisp white wine to me. Very nice, prominent taste overall, yet not overpowering. The salt is there, but once again is not overpowering. Not a lot of straight up tobacco taste, but the tobacco used is obviously of high quality. There are no overwhelmingly artificial or chemical tastes.

If I had to sum it up briefly, I'd characterize it as 'a taste of summer'. This seems like a wonderful snus for the warmer season, and paired wonderfully with a tall glass of good cold iced tea--not all that popular in Europe, I'm told, but it's the quintessential American summer drink.

THE VERDICT:A different, very interesting high quality snus. Highly recommended. 4 stars.

spirit72: that was a beautiful description and review! I absolutely agree with you. Since those snus I've been wanting to try eldelberry juice (which I never had)
The only thing is that the can I ordered took 12 days to get to Bs As., so they were a little dry. As now I'm in Montreal (where snus arrive in 2 days!) I'll see if I get more so I have the chance to (re)try them fresh and moist!

I have yet to try the green portions. I think I'll add a can to my next order. Thanks for the great review!

I've got a can in the fridge, may have to break them out soon and have a taste - sounds interesting

I think they are very good, and actually may improve with age. Gotlands Green is a keeper.

That is an interesting observation. Gotlands claims that the reason they do not make a loose version is that the flavor does not keep over time in loose form :?:

I love em. I read alot of people said they tasted of fake apples and didnt like em.

I never tasted any apple flavor. The one thing i think some will not like is the bitterness it has after the juice is swallowed. Almost like ripe persimons for anyone who lives in the south.

They are one of my favorite portions but the taste can get a bit old and to not over do it i use them sparingly so i will always enjoy them.

And you r are right about the portion sizes. Very easy on the gums and have ALOT of snus in them.

Definately a top portion in my book.

Grim, you hit it right on the nail. This is an occasional snus. It is such an interesting change that way. Use it too much, and it will change on you with a vicious kick.

This is a tin I just leave open in the fridge, and only use a few times a week.

Yeah, definitely an occasional snus. I think making it a regular would fall under 'too much of a good thing'.

I keep coming back to that 'summer' motif. I could see myself grabbing a roll of it just about every June, July and August.

Ahhhh....now I have to have one more before bed. Damn it you guys!

You know what, Latina, now that you mention it, that IS definitely there. I've never had Elderberry juice either, but I have had Elderberry pie. Very distinct, sweetish and tart taste. Been years and years since I've had it, but ahhhhh the memories.

Grön is great! Thanks for the review.

There seem to be some confusion about the Elderflower/berry. There is a very big difference between the FLOWERS and the BERRIES from the Elder tree. The (white) flowers - which is what the Gotland Grön contains - has this subtle, herbal and somewhat light apple-like taste. Not to be confused with the (red) berries from the tree; they're much more bitter and 'dark' in taste.

Around these parts of the world the Elder tree is very common, and the elderflower juice is extremely popular, both cold and warm. It's also used for icecream, pancakes, candy and so on, especially right now in the early summertime. The berries are more an autumn-thing and most often consumed as hot juice or soup.

Ah, well, just a little heads-up from mr. know-it-all :P

Grönsnus has always been in my top five list and I am expecting three tins this week.....

I tend to use it quite a lot and I've never grown tired of the taste, but I can see why people would say that it is not an all the time all day snus

I think anyone who likes the new Icefruit will love Grönsnus

I opened my can of green this morning. I don't know if I got an old can or if its normal, but my portions seem a little dry. I don't particularly care for the snus or the can design. Can't like em all I guess. I still have a can of yellow to try.

Ahhhhhhhhh Yes! now I know what it is. I thought it was one of those plants/fruits that I can only try when I come to the north (like cranberry) but we actually have that same thing in the patagonia (the beautiful south region of Argentina). But we call it "sauco" and we also use both the berries and the flowers. In the patagonia people prepares a beberage with the flowers that is called "champagne de sauco" and it's delicious!!!
