I know it's a lot of work but I have worked way longer hours than that before. Here's a snipped of a PM i sent to someone else regarding why I am even considering this:
Here is the reason I am even considering this. I am 25, I work as an assistant at an insurance company, so my 6 years of work experience is essentially all admin related, and partially related to the medical field (i'm a medical assistant). I spent a little time in the army, but coordinating indirect fire support for the infantry or jumping out of airplanes isn't very marketable in the civilian sector. I am at my ceiling, I ain't going nowhere, and corporate jobs are on the downturn in this economy. I am one bad financial year away from getting axed from my job, as are all of the other employees. I have no schooling, in fact I only have a GED. While I have managed to become pretty well of in financial terms through hard work and dependability, (even after a few years of very low pay in the military) I just simply have no where else to go unless I go back to school, but I can't afford to take off to go to school full time. And furthermore, it seems like degrees are less and less marketable and yet more and more expensive to acquire.
Anyways, I am hard working person, I don't mind working 12 hour days if it is for decent pay, I have no social life outside of my family and have time to burn frankly, and I do not care about weekends. I would work the graveyard shift every day if it meant making an extra $3 an hour, honestly. But there is no future for me financially in my current state of affairs. But now, I have this golden oppertunity in that I married a girl who has a family with several successfull businesses that they all built from the ground up. Her mom literally was living in a shelter after immegrating here from the Phillipines when she started this business on a small grant she won in a local contest. I know the blood sweat and tears that have gone into making this business a reality for her and I admire her succes because of it. In return of course she makes a lot of money. Anyways, I may have the oppertunity to fulfill my true dream in life, which is to break the corporate shackles and run a small business, even if it is in partnership with family members. I don't care if the work is twice as hard, there is just a certian liberation in knowing that your paycheck is entirely dependant on your performance, and frankly I perform best in situations like that. Another point to note is that she will be retiring soon and will be handing the restaurant over to us anyways. My wife is a chemist and is doing great in her career so she will likely not be quitting that job to manage the restaurant, therefore it will fall on me. The way I see it, this is just experience that will be necessary for when the business is eventually transfered into our names.
She has the capitol required to build out the existing location, hire 2 employees etc, and I have enough savings to keep my bills paid for nearly a year so I can go without income. I am just trying to learn as much about it before I go talk to her. I want to make it clear that, though I am 25, I am 110% ready, willing, and capable of undetaking such an endeavor.
When I was in the army and first married my wife, there were literally months at a time where I would work from 5:30am to 11:00pm every day including weekends, and often times had night duty where I would work a complete 24 hours consecutively (and on very rare occasions 48 hours, though those required like a day of sleep afterwards lol). In short, I have worked longer hours for way less pay. While this isn't going to pay out for a few years, I have enough saved to bankroll my income for a year, and if successfull, I will have a nice piece of the pie carved out for myself in 10 years (maybe even less depending on how business goes). If I continue on my current track, i'll be stuck making what I make now for the forseable future...
