Thanks to two suggestions I picked up Frog Morton on the Town, and GL Pease Haddo's Delight. And Mike was kind enough to send me some samples, Balkan Supreme and Full Virginia something...can't read the handwriting.
So how is the pipe smoking experiment coming Chad?? Surprised you haven't said anything about it???? You seemed so excited and then silence.
Haven't actually experimented with it enough to come up with anything productive to say. I'm enjoying it..... but I really haven't had enough brands to compare and see if it's something I would continue doing or not. So it's still investigation for now.
Well, from initial impressions, I'm enjoying it. It's alot different from what I thought it would be. Tobacco smoke is very strong, so I can't hit it like anything I've smoked before. I'm having to learn how to guage my inhales, how long to hold, how to draw the smoke, alot of different techniques. First attempt I just lit up, smoked, and coughed for a long time. But the more I'm doing it, I'm getting a little better at packing and actually "smoking" the pipe, but there is ALOT to learn and it is going to take alot of practice to actually figure out. But I can say - pipe tobacco is a whole different animal. It has a more pure taste. Alot better than any cigarette I've ever had, and the aroma is almost intoxicating.
Yes Chad, the most complicated form of smoking there is. From drying the tobacco correctly before you even start, to packing the tobacco right, to lighting the tobacco right, to how you smoke the tobacco, and most important, how slow you smoke the tobacco, to knowing when to tamp the tobacco, to cleaning the pipe after you are done, to knowing how to rest the pipes between use. So much to learn to get the most out of it, and not hurt your mouth when smoking
I suspect you may have just jumped in a bit blindly. elmos here has been smoking pipes for many, many years and has been a long time member of Smokers forums. He has been a true friend and given me valuable advice. Even tonight, we were on the phone for over an hour talking about it
Check it out, as good of a place as Snuson, and a whole section devoted to new smokers. I can't tell you how much I have learned and I am just half way through those threads
I didn't realize smoking could be so complicated.
A pipe's the most complicated ordinary smoking experience I'm familiar with. A hookah probably has it beat, but I'm not familiar, and it isn't that common. A pipe's pretty rewarding, and the attention that goes into preparing a quality smoke adds to the experience imo. Giving the pipe the attention it requires slows you down, and makes the experience that much better. It's not at all like a cigarette, where you slam it down and go on about your business.
It has been a huge help to me Chad, wanted to at least point folks there if they are seriously interested in this hobby.
And I have 5 posts already....on my way to 5000.
Um....probably not. There are folks on that forum who have been smoking pipes for 50 years. A MUCH older forum than Snuson. Way more vets their than rookies
lxskllr, a hookah is positively simple compared to a pipe. You can't hurt yourself with a hookah, you absolutely can with a pipe. It's called Tongue bite... Basically, burning your tongue. Comes from steam that is produced if you either don't dry the tobacco properly. Or much more common, you smoke to fast, let the pipe heat up too much and create too much steam in the process.
My entire interest in a pipe is the whole process around it. Taking my tgime to prepare it properly, and most importantly, taking my time to smoke it properly.
But I am so fortunate. I have a pipe mentor, plus the resources on that forum, and have been given the names of 7 books I will be reading over the next month or so
