I used to smoke a pipe. It always smelled better than it tasted - still great though.
A good friend of mine died of lung cancer at the age of 53 and he only smoked a pipe.

Another thing to keep in mind is that while pipe smokers don't seem to have the same numbers that cigarette smokers do where disease is concerned, the risks of head and neck cancers, heart disease, etc. are all still present, as they are when you smoke anything.
I'm just sayin'. Full disclosure and all.

I smoked many pipes in my younger years. I actually had a well sized collection of tobacco jars and a different pipe for a different flavor. It was a home hobby.
You can inhale it if ya want. When I did it I usually pushed my tongue out like a smoke plow and inhaled whatever was left in my mouth. Never got really much out of it however, just for the flavor and something to sit around it.

Also, heard the best method to fill a bowl is this:
1. Fill the bowl to the top and then press down on the tobacco lightly, as a child would.
2. Fill the bowl again and press down on the tobacco more firmly, as a mother might.
3. Then fill the bowl once again to the top and then press down on the tobacco very hard, as the father might do
Any input on what you guys do?

I'd suggest new pipes to only fill a quarter of the way to the top and lightly push, break it in a couple times before you start packing the hell out of it. quarter ways just to finish a little 5 minute sit down and clean it out lightly, use same tobacco brand and repeat, adding a little more each other time.
Also short gentle puffs while occasionally mixing the tobacco in the bowl to get rid of under ash moisture and for an even burn and to lit any tobacco that hasn't. Normal cases you'll lose a burn because moisture and burnt tobacco made the tobacco underneath hard to burn. You can pat out excess ash.
From what I remember first times were very tedious but got easier with every light. Or I could just be blowing smoke out my tail pipe with all this, Its been so long I don't remember. lol
Key is to make the pipe burn cool and dry, I know burn and cool don't really fit into the same sentence but when you burn the hell out your tobacco and the taste doesn't come through because your smoking moisture resin rather than tobacco, you'll understand.

If you have a couple of afternoons to browse nothing but pipe tobacco reviews, log in (and bookmark) the following site:

tobaccoreviews.com is an amazing resource. If you're disappointed/disgusted with one of your first pipe tobaccos, just try another variety -- tobaccoreviews.com will help triangulate toward your personal preference (which will likely change significantly over the years). I began with a fairly bland cavendish -- the long-discontinued Troost. Now I'm more into latakia blends.
There are dozens of decent tobacconists and pipe shops -- and pipesmoking forums -- on line. For simplicity's sake, I've just boiled the shops down to one -- good selection, good service, and the prices are, as far as I've shopped, the most consistently "reasonable." They also often offer factory-reject briars -- as smokable and durable as finished, branded briars, but rejected for an accidental scrape or whatever -- and sold for half the price.

I second all the recommendations to begin smoking with a corncob. They fall apart quickly, but they smoke smoothly and coolly without your having to read up much about "break in" and other arcana. Eventually, you'll come to own a half dozen decent briars. I'd recommend straight shafts, not the handsome but bubbly bents -- and larger sizes, thicker bowls, once you get the hang of puffing. Briars should not be smoked more than once a day.
A "pipe nail" is an essential tool. Of course, pass a cleaner thru the pipe with every bowl... or two.
Gotta go... last afternoon of the Soulard Oktoberfest beckons...
