question on dipping snuff

Isn't there a ph issue if done orally? Snuff is for the nose so it's ph is different than snus. Correct?

I've tried it with the odd sweet scotch and Checkerberry. It's fun for the anachronistic aspect, but otherwise I don't see the point when I could be packing my lip with lös or even the odd dip. Checkerberry is pretty tasty, like toned down, dry wintergreen dip.

The five or so times I've ever done it, I simply put a peanut-sized amount on a spoon and drop it in to my lower front lip. Initially the saliva is pretty strong but it subsides after a minute or two, at which point I generally get rid of it altogether.

The use of Scotch snuffs was not limited to only the deep south. From the mid 1860's to about 1920, one could find women of New York high society holding "Tea" parties on Park Avenue where "dipping snuff" was all the rage. Smoking was still a "Gentleman's" indulgence and most women still didn't smoke. :-)

Not too sure about just adding glycerine to Roderick's tobacco but I do know that American snuffs like Bruton and Garrett's as well as American Scotch's use fire cured and smoked tobaccos. It's what gives them their unique scents.

I live in the deep south there are still a few old cats that use we Garrett orally.they use the tin lid scoop around half a tin lid full, place it against the Bottem lip press down empty tin lid into bittern lip......fix it up with their tongue walla........spit as needed.
Only once i have seen one older lady use dry snuff, they are fast and discreet.....
They wipe moisture off inside lower lip onto inside index finger.then with the inside wet part, curl index finger, place in snuff tin, with curled finger press dry side of finger under top lip and roll wet side with snuff into bottem lip.
All in one quik motion......
If you didn't know better anyone would think they where wiping their mouth.
I.e.
Some use small cloths to hide the snuff use,they fold it around the rest of their fingers,as to hide the process......
allot of people think they are wiping their mouth or nose.......
But........my baby sitter from age 3-5 used WE Garrett......finger@home on porch....etc

Yes Snusdog... but if i could say get hold of an aircured burley that would be ok, right? Ok so i would be missing out on pasteurisation by only just stirring in glycerine... but oliver twist isn't pasteurised.

In the south, old timers would whittle the bark from a hickory stick, dip it into an American Scotch Snuff, coat a bit of the stick with the tobacco, and then suck on the stick. They would spit as needed (thus the origin of the terms: “Dipping” and “Dip Stick”).

I remember one of my former coworkers (an old timer, he was in his 70s) telling me about his grandmother taking American Scotch Snuff and putting a bit of it in a damp rag or piece of cloth to use orally.

However, the curing and processing of American Scotches and English/European Snuffs are different. European Snuffs are not intended for oral as well as nasal use (as are the Scotches). Therefore, to try and use an English SP or Toast orally would be pretty nasty.

Thus any leaf you get from a snuff maker, you will probably want to make sure the way it has been cured has not closed off the possibility for oral use

Because what i'm wondering is why don't UK snussers just order up a load of air-cured burley from Roderick at Toque and just mix in glycerine? instant los snus.

ok when people dip snuff... it's like wetting your finger and putting it in what would normally be nasal snuff, right? i'm sure i read it's one of the worst way to take snuff due to TSNAs but why is that? surely if the tobacco is air-cured it would be no different to say chewing a bit of oliver twist wouldn't it?
