That is the reason why I hoped you would mention a game of this type you played some 15, 20 years ago, I would look it up and see from the screens if it is the one I am trying to find.

The first experience I had with a game similar to what you are describing was Bubble Bobble for the original Nintendo which was freakin awesome but I doubt that's what you are looking for.
